There is a saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch. If you want to get paid, you have to do your job. A lot of people ask me, why does Congress get paid if they don't do their job and pass a budget? It's a good question.
Last week the House passed a bill that will require both chambers to pass a budget by April 15th. If they don't, they won't get paid.

(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Congressman Sam Graves issued the following statement today after the U.S. House passed the No Budget/No Pay act which requires both the House and Senate to pass budgets or not get paid.
"Passing a budget is one of the most basic responsibilities of any government. For the past four years the United States Senate has failed to do that. If they will not do their job, then they should not be paid.
One of the unique qualities of Americans is our willingness to help our neighbors in need. In North Missouri, we know when our neighbors are having a hard time or need help getting back on their feet. It's a part of our way of life.
In Washington, however, every disaster has become an excuse to spend money without worrying about the budget. That's what happened last week when the House passed a $50 billion aid package to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.
It is one of the great privileges of my job to be able to recommend a select group of individuals for admission to the United States Service Academies each year.
