Graves Issues Statement on the Passing of Kansas City Firefighters

October 13, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Sam Graves issued the following statement after two Kansas City firefighters were killed in the line of duty on Monday night. Larry J. Leggio and John V. Mesh passed away from injuries sustained during a building collapse in Kansas City's northeast side. Leggio and Mesh had helped rescue two civilians from the scene prior to the collapse.

"I am terribly saddened to hear of the passing of Larry Leggio and John Mesh," Rep. Graves said. "These two men died as heroes, but leave behind daughters, wives, and mothers. I offer my condolences to their families and all of those affected by this tragedy.

"In times like these we are reminded just how dangerous the job that these men and women do every day really is, and we are forever grateful for their sacrifices."

Leggio, a 17-year veteran of the Kansas City Fire Department, leaves behind his wife and mother. Mesh, a 13-year veteran of the Department, leaves behind a wife and four young daughters.
