Straight Talk with Sam

As this year begins to come to a close, I’m reminded how blessed I am to live in the greatest country in the world and represent the finest area of this country. North Missouri has been my home for my entire life, and I consider it a great honor to serve.

In this position, no one will agree with you 100% of the time.  Still, our system of government works, and disagreement is part of it, quite frankly. However, I work diligently in Congress to put forward legislation that has a measurable impact on North Missouri. We’ve recently seen the fruits of those efforts.

As Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in the House, I’ve worked tirelessly to get legislation across the finish line. These days, most legislation never makes its way out of the House. Yet, just last week, the Senate sent the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) to be signed into law. I led the House in passing it by an overwhelming margin the week before.

You’ve heard me talk about WRDA repeatedly. I know it’s not flashy and doesn’t lead the headlines, but it has a huge impact. That’s because a big chunk of North Missouri and our economy is rooted in what happens on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. We can’t ensure that flood control and navigation are the priorities if WRDA doesn’t give the Corps of Engineers their marching orders. Without WRDA, locks and dams and the navigation channel don’t get the attention they need, making it much harder to get goods to market.

It wasn’t just WRDA, though. The E-Bridge Act passed as well! I’ve been pushing it for a while, and we finally got it done. It will make it easier for the federal government to work with cities and municipalities to expand broadband in rural areas. Like WRDA, it removes needless red tape and makes it easier to get projects done.

I’m proud of our work at the Transportation Committee, and it’s an honor to lead it. In fact, I was thrilled to be selected earlier this month by the Republican Steering Committee to continue leading the Committee in the next Congress. There’s much to be done, and I look forward to working with President Trump over the next few years to make that happen.

If there’s anything I can ever assist you with, please don’t hesitate to let me know. It’s an honor to serve you in Congress.

Sincerely,

Sam Graves
