Straight Talk with Sam

ast week, I discussed the service medals my office was able to recover for a Northwest Missouri veteran’s family. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of doing that many times. One of the great joys of representing you is helping when the federal bureaucracy isn’t getting the job done.

A lot of folks don’t realize that if you run into a federal issue, you can call my office and we can try to assist. It might be missing service medals, a delayed passport, or a permitting issue with the Corps of Engineers.

Whether you’re missing a tax refund or trying to track down a missing EIN number for your business, federal agencies like the IRS expect to hear from us. If your Social Security checks aren’t showing up or Medicare isn’t working for you, my team is happy to try to figure out what’s holding things up.

If you want to break it down to dollars and cents, my office has gotten back or saved almost $244,000 for North Missouri constituents in the month of August alone. Year to date, it’s $17 million.  Whether it’s IRS refunds, Social Security checks, VA benefits, or disaster program reimbursements, if a constituent is owed the money by the federal government, they should get it. We’re always happy to jump in and help.

To be clear, there are times we don’t get the answer you want, for one reason or another. However, we’re certainly going to get you an answer. Sometimes, that’s half the battle. A lot of times the federal government isn’t always the most responsive, but they’ll generally start talking with a bit of encouragement.

While passing meaningful legislation is incredibly important, one of the most rewarding parts of my job is constituent service. If you’re in need of assistance, please call my office at 816-792-3976 or visit graves.house.gov/contact. Helping North Missourians isn’t a partisan issue—if you need my help, I’m committed to ensuring that you receive it.

Sincerely,

Sam Graves
