Schumer's Senseless Shutdown

Straight Talk with Sam

At 12 a.m. on October 1st, the government shut down. It didn’t have to happen. House Republicans already passed a bill to keep the government open. There were no gimmicks and no partisan politics involved; just a straightforward, clean bill that ensured our troops and Border Patrol agents get paid and the government continued to operate.

Despite voting for the same clean funding bill 13 times during the Biden Administration, Senator Chuck Schumer decided this time would be different. Schumer and his caucus shut down the government, demanding $1.5 trillion for left-wing priorities, like using your tax dollars to pay for healthcare for illegal immigrants and climate scams in foreign countries, all to stick it to President Trump.

Who did he actually stick it to, though? The American people.

Government shutdowns hurt hard-working Americans. Our troops, Border Patrol agents, and Air Traffic Controllers are now working without pay. These folks keep us safe, and now they're expected to continue doing so without a paycheck. We’ve worked diligently to improve the quality of life of servicemembers and their families, and Schumer’s Shutdown throws that all out the window.

While Medicare and Social Security continue uninterrupted, wait times for assistance with these programs are likely to increase. Schumer’s shutdown also blocks a Medicare program that allows some individuals to receive treatment at home. Many critical VA services will continue, but some lifesaving mental health programs for veterans and homeless veteran support are in jeopardy. The list goes on, and the overall consequences of a shutdown are extensive. It’s all a show for the far-left base, driven by a politically motivated vendetta towards the President.

Despite the shutdown, my office remains open, and we continue to work. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call us. While many federal agencies are closed or limited in responding, we will do everything we can to help.

We must keep the government open. Chuck Schumer and his pals need to stop playing games and start doing what’s right for the American people. They need to vote on the clean bill to reopen the government immediately so that we can get back to business and the American people can move forward.

Sincerely,

Sam Graves
