In a tradition that dates back to its earliest years – a time without air conditioning, to be specific – Congress has left Washington, D.C. for the annual August recess period. This extended time away from our nation's capital allows me to embark on one of the most rewarding aspects of my job as your representative in Washington: traveling across Northwest Missouri to meet with many of you.
I often joke that the District of Columbia is "17 square miles of logic-free environment." Many people there seem to think that they don't have to operate within a budget, or they can simply spend money they don't have while incurring debt their children and grandchildren will have to pay back.
Missouri common sense tells us that we have to live within our means, and that it is wrong to mortgage the future to pay for the present. Time and time again, I hear from individuals and families in the Sixth District who are worried about how we will ever pay back the mountains of debt the federal government continues to pile up.
I assure you that from all of your letters and phone calls, I hear what you are saying. Washington is on the wrong path. We need less government and more solutions that do not involve adding more regulations and more bureaucrats. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
