Who is a Full Time Worker?
In 2010, Nancy Pelosi said we needed to pass the president's healthcare law in order to find out what was in it. It turns out, even those who voted to pass the law are still finding out what is in it, three years later. To this day, we continue to discover new provisions which will negatively impact businesses, workers, and the overall economy.
As you may know, the law requires companies to provide healthcare for their workers if they have 50 full time workers. For decades, Americans have come to expect that a full time job means at least a 40 hour work week with many workers putting in even more time.
Now, however, the President's healthcare law assaults the traditional 40 hour work week by defining a full time employee as someone who works 30 hours a week. That doesn't pass the common sense test. The average American non-farm worker puts in just over 35 hours a week. As a result, some employers have started to cut back workers' hours.
To correct this, I have joined with 133 of my colleagues in the House to sponsor legislation which redefines a full time employee as a worker who averages at least 40 hours a week. This legislation, the Save American Workers Act, will help correct this major deficiency in the law. Please know that I will continue to work with my House colleagues to blunt the negative impacts caused by so many of this unworkable law's provisions.
