From Time to Time

The Constitution says that the President shall "from time to time give to the Congress information of the State of the Union…" That time comes this week as the President will report on the condition of our country and outline his legislative goals for the year.

The State of the Union speech is full of pomp and circumstance. It was not always this way. Thomas Jefferson thought the speech made us look more like a monarchy, than a democracy. He sent a written address instead. However, in 1913, Woodrow Wilson decided to give his speech in person.

In a change, many members have decided to sit in a bi-partisan fashion this year. In the past members sat with their own party. That is a good first step, but we will have to wait to see whether or not Congress will have the courage to address our problems head on.

In order to create the jobs we desperately need, government must get off the backs of entrepreneurs and job creators. Government does not create jobs.

I hope that the President will acknowledge that we cannot spend, tax or bail our way to prosperity. I hope that he will call on government to tighten its belt significantly. A $1.3 trillion deficit is not sustainable and we must work now to get our spending under control.

This is an opportunity not only to fulfill one of the duties of the Constitution; it is also an opportunity to change the spending as usual in Washington.

Sincerely,
