Teacher Tax Credit
Many of us had a teacher in our life that made a difference. Someone who took the extra time to make sure we understood the lesson or someone who helped us find a hidden talent. A good teacher can make all the difference in a child's life.
A good teacher is an integral and important part of improving educational performances in the classroom. Every year, teachers across Missouri reach into their own pockets to purchase classroom supplies they believe will benefit their students and create a better learning environment.
To compensate those teachers who go the extra mile for their students, Congress authorized a $250 above-the-line tax deduction for full-time educators who purchase classroom supplies out of their own pockets. Without Congressional action this deduction will expire at the end of this year. This deduction lets educators know that we appreciate the sacrifices they make for our children.
I have introduced bi-partisan legislation to extend and expand this valuable deduction for our nation's teachers. Our legislation would increase the deduction to $500 for full-time teachers and extend it through 2017. It would also make pre-school teachers from state accredited schools eligible for the first time. H.R. 3148 has been referred to the Ways and Means Committee.
Good teachers are a vital resource for this country. Many of us would not be where we are today if they had not touched our lives. If you see a teacher today, thank them, because they are positively impacting young lives every day.
Sincerely,
