Shop A Small Business This Holiday Season

November 28, 2011
E-Newsletters

Last week, millions of shoppers across the country participated in an unofficial American holiday- Black Friday. As the busiest shopping day of the year, many businesses count on these sales to stay in business. In fact, this is the day when many retailers go into the black, or turn a profit, for the year.

First, there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday. Now, Small Business Saturday is an event that drives shoppers to support local, independently-owned merchants. As the Chairman of the Small Business Committee, I introduced H.Res. 468in the House last week to express support for the designation of Small Business Saturday and increase awareness of the value of locally owned small businesses.

America's small businesses are the engines of job creation and economic growth— responsible for creating 7 out of 10 new jobs. For every $100 spent with locally owned, small business stores, an estimated $68 returns to the community through local taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.

But for small businesses to continue being our best economic catalysts, they need our support. Small Business Saturday is the perfect opportunity for consumers to get their holiday shopping accomplished while supporting small businesses that will help bolster the economy.

And even though Small Business Saturday may have already passed this year, there is still plenty of time to shop at a local small business. I hope this holiday season you will join me in supporting the thousands of local small businesses who need our support.

Sincerely,
