Straight Talk with Sam

Dear Friend,

Agriculture is the backbone of North Missouri's economy. I can never say it enough. As a sixth generation family farmer, I always enjoy talking with fellow farmers from our area.

It was my honor to spend time last week at the 14th Annual Farm City Breakfast in St. Joseph. I enjoyed a great discussion with National Association of Farm Broadcasters Executive Director Tom Brand. We touched on many ag-related topics including the farm bill, trade, tariffs, reigning in the EPA and flood control on the Missouri River.

As always, the St. Joe Chamber of Commerce hosted a well-attended event that raised a lot of money for student scholarships. Those who attended know the importance of preparing the future generation of farmers. Many FFA groups participated and I enjoyed hearing the enthusiasm of these young adults when talking about agriculture.

The future of agriculture will only be strong if we give the next generation the tools they need to succeed. If we don't, our youth will not stay in North Missouri and our rural way of life will be in jeopardy. It is events like the Farm City Breakfast that provide the next generation of farmers a chance to continue feeding the world and I was proud to be a part of it this year.

Sincerely,
