Secure the Border

It's no secret illegal immigration is an ongoing problem in the United States and that the federal government has thus far failed to stem the tide of illegal aliens entering our country. Thousands of immigrants continue to cross our southern border and remain here unlawfully, proving the so-called "virtual fence" has not worked.

It should be clearer than ever that we cannot hope to stop individuals from entering this country illegally until we finish building a physical fence on our border with Mexico. In addition, U.S. Border Patrol must have the materials and manpower it needs to guard the fence and enforce our immigration laws to the fullest extent possible.

As a way to address these two issues, I recently introduced the Border Security and Employee Verification Act of 2010. The bill requires the Department of Homeland Security to begin immediately building 150 miles of new fencing on the southern border – in addition to the 700 miles that have already been completed – and it increases the number of Border Patrol agents on our southern border by 6,000.

The rule of law provides the basis for our country and our way of life. Those who enter this nation without going through the proper naturalization process make their first act on American soil an illegal one. Many of these illegal aliens take jobs American citizens want and others live off the taxpayers. But before we can begin to deal with those already here illegally, we must secure the border.

Sincerely,
