Right Policies Needed for Job Growth

In July, the economy created 117,000 jobs. While this number was better than expected, it is still not good enough. We have an unemployment rate of just over 9 percent, but it is much more when you add in those who have stopped looking for work, or are under-employed.

I've long said that government does not create jobs. What government can do is enact the right polices that set the table for economic growth. For instance, we must have a tax structure that is competitive with the rest of the world. We need to streamline our tax code so the small businesses spend less time trying to calculate how much tax they owe, and more time trying to figure out how to grow and expand their business.

We also need to find and end the crushing regulations coming from Washington. We made some progress earlier this year, but we have more to do. Washington rules and regulations have become obstacles to growth.

Finally, we need to open new markets and new opportunities for American businesses. The House has passed five bills that would open up or expand our domestic energy production. Not only would these solutions decrease our dependence on foreign oil and reduce the price at the pump, but they would spur the creation of thousands of good-paying American jobs.

I hope that both sides will put partisan rhetoric aside and work on solutions to help create jobs. It is imperative that we work together to help the private sector grow and get our economy moving again.

Sincerely,
