Repaying Our Vets

Repaying our military veterans has long been a proud American tradition. During the Revolutionary War, the Second Continental Congress enacted the first legislation providing for the long-term care of America's disabled and elderly warriors. Those hurt defending the United States would receive half pay for the duration of their injuries. Later, Congress extended pensions to all veterans who had faithfully and honorably served their terms of enlistment.

Thankfully, the generations since have ensured that new waves of veterans enjoyed the same protections and benefits. Eventually the system was expanded to provide medical care and housing assistance in addition to a pension network.

Today, the Veterans Administration (VA) provides the essential services owed to all men and women who have stood in defense of our nation. During my time in Congress, I have worked to increase veterans funding by more than 100 percent.

Unfortunately, veterans too often encounter problems with the assistance they get from the VA. Congress is working to resolve these breakdowns in the system. I'm committed to increasing the quality of these health and education benefits without increasing out-of-pocket costs. Veterans do not deserve just any care; they deserve the very best.

I will continue to strive in Washington to hold the VA accountable and to improve its performance. It is my mission that the veterans of Northwest Missouri enjoy top-quality care and support.
