Straight Talk with Sam

Our Second Amendment states that "A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." In 1789, this and the other original amendments were drafted by James Madison. Known as the Bill of Rights, they were ratified 1791 and still hold true today.

It is no secret that President Obama and his liberal anti-gun activists would like to see our rights significantly reduced. Time after time his administration has attempted to restrict the rights of legal gun owners, and time after time these attacks on our Constitution have been rejected by the American people. Now, without a liberal partner in the Senate, the President is looking toward federal agencies to defend his anti-gun agenda.

As you may know, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' (BATFE) recently proposed a ban on M855 ammunition, which is the most commonly used cartridges among hunters, sportsmen, and recreational shooters. I fear that because anti-gun activists and politicians have failed in their efforts to ban many commonly used firearms, they have refocused their attacks on the ammunition necessary to operate those firearms.

We must balance safety with our Second Amendment rights, but blanket bans from unaccountable bureaucrats are not the way to do this. That is why I have sent a letter to BATFE Director Jones calling on him to revoke the proposed ban on M855 ammunition. This ban is a blatant attack on our Second Amendment rights and north Missouri way of life.

As your representative, please know that I will aggressively oppose this and any other attempts to limit any of our constitutionally protected rights.

Sincerely,
