E-15 May Be Coming to a Pump Near You
I have long supported increasing the renewable fuels standard to at least 15 percent ethanol. Just last week, we learned that E-15 (15 percent ethanol mixed with 85 percent gasoline) will now be available for use in 2007 model year or newer cars. An ongoing study will determine later this year if it can be used in cars from 2001 to the present.
Increasing usage of renewable fuels is one of the many steps we need to take to wean ourselves off of foreign oil. Ethanol is already reducing oil imports and it currently replaces about five percent of gasoline supplies. Moving to E-15 will further reduce the amount of oil we import. I would much rather rely on Missouri farmers for our energy needs than Saudi Arabia or the other OPEC countries.
Here in Missouri's Sixth District we are on the leading edge of renewable energy. Our farmers, and the ethanol they produce, are playing an important role in reducing energy costs. This new E-15 blend will likely cost less than the current E-10 mix or "straight gasoline" offered throughout the country.
This is a significant step in the right direction. Increasing investment in ethanol and biodiesel will raise farm incomes and rejuvenate rural economies. It is also good for consumers and our environment. However, we must continue to build on the work that has already been done and further increase our reliance on home-grown American energy.
Northwest Missouri is leading the way in the use of renewable fuels and Washington is starting to take notice.
Sincerely,
