Straight Talk with Sam

One of the responsibilities I look forward to most every year is the opportunity to recommend deserving young men and women for nominations to the United States Service Academies.

These impressive Americans are among the brightest and most dedicated students in the nation. Although my recommendation is not the final step in their application process, I always feel confident that our candidates can compete with any group in this country.

I am proud to announce the following nominees have accepted appointments to the United States Service Academies:

Austin Ahern - US Air Force Academy (Lee's Summit North HS)

John Barry - US Naval Academy (Liberty North HS)

Alexander Dye - US Air Force Academy (Blue Springs HS)

Cody Hankins - US Air Force Academy (Smithville HS)

Cullen O'Dear - US Naval Academy (Rockhurst HS)

Jacob Phillips - US Military Academy (Savannah HS)

The United States Service Academies include the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy. These prestigious programs offer a unique and rewarding experience for the brave young Americans who are accepted to attend. Please join me in congratulating this year's Academy appointees.

The top responsibility of the federal government is ensuring our military remains the strongest on earth. It's the only way to ensure America remains a global force for good and our homeland is secure. But that is all impossible without some of the bravest and brightest young men and women volunteering to serve this country. I am so grateful for all of their sacrifice and selflessness, and I will continue to protect and provide for them and all of our Armed Service members at every turn in Congress.

Sincerely,
