The Boston Terror Attacks
As many people know, the Boston Marathon is an opportunity for that city – and the entire nation – to welcome the world's elite athletes to our shores. It's a time-honored tradition that represents the best of America. Indeed, this year's Boston Marathon – which occurred on a local holiday known as Patriots' Day, commemorating the anniversary of the American Revolution's first battles – witnessed nearly 27,000 runners from 96 countries.
Yet something else happened at this year's race that leaves our nation heartbroken. The heinous, cowardly, and despicable attacks that killed three and injured 180 more will forever mark a dark moment in our nation's history. It represents the first successful terrorist attack on our nation's soil since 9/11.
These incidents and the subsequent manhunt for the two suspects serve as a stark reminder that our nation is still not immune to the threat of terrorism. A Gallup poll released at the beginning of last week found that zero percent of respondents said terrorism was the most important problem facing America today. But we can't forget that it takes just one time for terrorists to be lucky, whereas it takes us being vigilant and right every time to prevent these attacks.
As I write, there is still much uncertainty as to the motive of the suspects, as well as the health of the remaining victims that are hospitalized. All of the victims and their families remain in our prayers.
At the end of the day, we will come away from this experience stronger as a nation, and hopefully more united as citizens of this great country.
